I used to have those, and they’re not fun.
When even my previous favorite pre-workout supplement wasn’t getting me going for big days, it was time to find something new. And that’s where I discovered 1MR, short for 1 More Rep.
Let’s admit it – throughout the course of making this site, I’ve tried just about every pre-workout supplement under the sun. Some are good, some are not so good, and some are simply mind-blowing. And on some days, you need mind-blowing.

Make no mistake, this is an energy product. Just like you, I have my cardio, I have my “heavy” days, and then I have those leg days where I am a cripple for two days.
I have no problem achieving the pump, with or without nitric oxide. But sometimes, I admit that energy is a bit off. For those big days, if I don’t leave it all on the gym floor, then I’ve failed myself.
But what I’ve found is that 1.M.R. does not allow failure. You WILL have the energy to leave it all on the floor. You WILL get that last rep, and you WILL be sore for two days. After that, you’re going to feel great. That’s what this product does.
All you do is mix it with 6-8oz of cold water, take it 15-30 minutes before training, and get ready for the workout of your life.
I’ve got to warn you – this product is not for beginners. If you are new to pre-workout supplements, you need to read this carefully, and start with a low dosage.
BPI Sports is known for using the strongest extracts out there. There is absolutely no rubbish in their products. So when you see something this concentrated, you might think the dosage is too small. Trust me, it is far from too small.
With such a serious product, it’s important that we discuss every last bit of information so that you get the most out of it and avoid some of the pitfalls some beginners have had.

While BPI has increased the pumps in the new version (thank you guys!), I still consider this product to be all about energy – and BPI succeeds in a big way by giving you energy via an incredible mixture of stimulants. The increased dosage of pump ingredients makes it such a more well-rounded product.
It’s always best to break down the ingredients first, so that you know what you’re getting. This section discusses the new formulation, not the original. Lower down we discuss the differences. 1MR contains a proprietary formula. Like all other products, the highest-quantity ingredients are listed first, so we can get an idea of what’s in there. Thankfully, BPI does tell us how much caffeine there is – 300mg of caffeine, which is no joke. This is why 1 scoop is the max.

Pump and Endurance Ingredients
The pump and endurance ingredients are typically amino acids that require higher volume than the stimulants, so they are listed first. We are happy that the new formula contains more grams of proprietary matrix – we assume most of this went into more pumps, solving some of the problems of the original formula!
The first ingredient is L-Arginine Alpha Ketogluterate, or AAKG. This is the primary pump product in over 90% of pre-workout supplements, and is discussed in detail on our Pre-Workout Supplements intro page. In short, the arginine creates a reaction that drives nitric oxide into your veins, dilating them and improving bloodflow. This bloodflow to your muscles gives you the great pump, as well as nutrient delivery.
AAKG is safe, effective, and even temporarily increases your peak output power – this is PROVEN in studies – and it will get you that one more rep you’ve been fighting for.
Next is Beta Alanine, an amino acid that promotes muscular endurance and reduces fatigue throughout your workout. What it does is create more carnosine in your muscles, which then buffers against lactic acid and other nasty chemical waste build-up that limit your workouts. Beta alanine is also proven to increase endurance – both in cardio / endurance sports and in resistance training. Once again, it’ll help you achieve more… for longer.
L-Taurine is the next amino acid ingredient, and this is all about cell hydration, expansion, and protein synthesis. Just like you don’t want to get dehydrated during yoru workout, neither do your muscle cells. Taurine solves that problem and increases “time to failure”… meaning – you guessed it – more reps.
Creatine Monohydrate is next. Proven safe, effective, and just generally awesome for ATP energy production and muscle growth. There is no argument against creatine. While this probably isn’t enough creatine to fulfill your daily needs, it’s great to have some before your workout, as the arginine discussed above will help shuttle it into your muscles.
1MR Energy and Focus Ingredients
Now it’s time for the fun stuff.
N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine is simply awesome. This is a focus aid amino acid used by the brain. It was originally used for a minor treatment to ADHD, and is a huge improvement from older L-Tyrosine formulations.

BPI Sports, along with other companies, realized that N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine is FAR more bioavailable in your body – more makes it to your brain – and it helps put you in the zone. With this discovery, it’s becoming quite common to put it into pre-workout supplements, simply because it works great. I’ve even used it to study and write. You simply don’t get distracted, which is exactly what we need in the squat rack.
Skipping down to Schisandra Chinensis (Whole Fruit Plant Part), this also behaves similarly, providing brain focus and limiting distractions.
Caffeine – The primary stimulant, 300mg of it. If you don’t know what 300mg of caffeine will do to you, then you might want to start with a half a scoop. Focus, energy, increased metabolism / fat burn… caffeine does it all. Just make sure you know how much you can handle and modify your powder dosage from there.
Skipping down to Yerba Mate (Leaf Plant Part), this is a milder stimulant that mixes extremely well with the caffeine. It brings a dash of euphoria along with anti-cancer, anti-cholesterol, and anti-obesity benefits.
Citrus Sinensis (Whole Plant Part) – Orange extract, essentially. It’s anti-depressant and anti-inflammatory. New to pre-workout supplements, but anything that’s anti-inflammatory is very welcomed by my shoulders and knees.
Kigelia Africana (Bark Plant Part) – Another anti-inflammatory ingredient.
Paullinia Cupana (Seed Plant Part) – This is the extract from guarana, a known natural stimulant. Once again, it brings the energy and focus.
Paullinia Cupana – The main action here is as a bronchiodilator, meaning it opens your lungs up. It’s great whether you have asthma or not, an is great for you cardio lovers. Your lungs will be OPEN due to this!
Adhatoda Vasica – Another stimulant that works as a “mental motivator”.
Vitis Vinifera (Seed Plant Part) – Grape seed extract – common in newer supplements for acting like an adaptogen (sets your stress hormone levels straight) and nootropic (brain enhancer / smart drug!)
What a great line-up. Start with the pumps, then bring the energy, focus, and even brain enhancement! Although this product is all about energy and endurance, the new formulation’s increase of pump ingredients really makes it a far better product!
I’ll admit, this section is a bit obsolete now that the new 1MR has increased pumps. You no longer need to add more AAKG – there’s plenty in there!
But if you find that you love the raw energy, but still want more pumps, you can still try adding more AAKG, or even consider something new like GPLC to 1MR for crazy pumps with the already-included 1MR energy/focus.
Now you’re also going to need more creatine monohydrate than what’s already included. Let’s guess that we already have 2g here (BPI Sports won’t tell anyone what’s in their proprietary formulas, of course). Creatine really can be taken whenever, but we do prefer to take it when nutrient uptake is at its highest: first thing in the morning, or immediately post workout.
So for ease’s sake, take the rest of your creatine monohydrate (perhaps 3 more grams) post-workout when your body’s uptake is totally ready for it.
Other 1MR Stacking Options
But what if you don’t like AAKG or GPLC, or simply want to try something new? Well, the next option is agmatine, which is simply ridiculous (get SNS Agmatine from the cheapest store here). AAKG gets converted to agmatine, which is what REALLY does the work for creatine nitric oxide. The solution is to just take agmatine, but it’s a bit more expensive than arginine itself.
But again, start with 1MR’s new formula. It’s improved so well that we think you’ll be happy with the pumps. If not, then check out the other stuff above.
As touched upon above, the main differences are these:
- More powder in each scoop – We are highly inclined to believe that this was a shift to more PUMP ingredients, since the amount of caffeine has stayed the same and the pumps are simply bigger.
- No more 1,3 Dimethylamylamine – We’re going to touch on this below, but the fact is that 1,3 dimethylamylamine, while being a cool stimulant, wasn’t needed along with every other stimulant in 1MR. The other stims make up for it, and adding it simply added a couple side effects. People started getting sick of this geranium extract, and BPI responded in kind.Do I like 1,3 Dimethylamylamine? Yes, sometimes. Do I need it in something as insane as this pre-workout? Hell no. This product is simply better without it!
- A few new extracts listed above, and seemingly more N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine, which I absolutely love.
- Better flavors. But that’s a subjective opinion. Green apple is even awesome, and normally I hate green apple! This is something you just need to try for yourself.
A natural comparison to make when considering the purchase of BPI 1MR is how it stacks up to other leading supplements of its kind. Jack3d is known to be at the front of this race, so let’s take a look at what happens when we pit the two supplements against each other. 1MR vs Jack3d. Who wins in a competition of ingredients, user reviews, effects, and possible side effects. Game on.

Let’s take a look at the our ingredients here first. 1MR sports a massive list of ingredients that, when reviewed, mainly point in the energy and focus direction, while somewhat neglecting the vascularity and muscle growing compounds that are touted in it’s product description. Of the 15 total, 7 are only stimulants, with the bulk of the product coming from 300 milligrams of caffeine. Don’t discredit N Acetyl L-Tyrosine though – this is a much more bioavailable form of L-Tyrosine that seriously gets you focused. If I was back in school, I’d even study with that stuff. Taurine is incredible for keeping the muscles hydrated too.
The other 8 ingredients in 1MR, of which L-Arginine Alpha Ketogluterate, Beta Alanine, and Creatine Monohydrate are included, attempt to tackle the nitric oxide-vascularity-and muscle building / endurance effects.
Jack3d ingredients, on the other hand, are relatively shorter at 5, with more of its mass being devoted to muscle building compounds such as Arginine Alpha Ketogluterate, Beta-Alanine and Creatine Monohydrate. Although it does include analogs of caffeine in the form of methlyxanthines to promote the energy and focus a lifter looks for in a pre-workout supplement. Both products contain Schizandra, which is an incredible focus aid that definitely works in both products. It’s of note to consider that we are comparing the powder versions of both of these products, as Jack3d only comes in powder form and powdered pre-workout supplements are far better deals (and more delicious and fun).
But the biggest difference with Jack3d is that 1MR no longer contains 1,3 dimethylamylamine.
1,3 dimethylamylamine (extracted from geranium) was popularized by Jack3d, and some people love it. However, it was not needed in 1MR – the negative side effects that some people got were simply not worth it. This is because the original product already had plenty of stimulants, and people simply started getting sick of 1,3 dimeth over time. I’m a fan of 1,3 on occasions, but the stuff is just not needed in such a potent formula with so many other stims!
The short of it is if you want crazy ENERGY and FOCUS without the side effects of geranium, you want 1MR. The main reason you want Jack3d is if you want less caffeine and more 1,3 dimethylamylamine.
But still, these really are both energy supplements. If you want enormous pumps with far less stimulants, then you’d be wise to check out SuperPump MAX, which won’t get you as “stimmed out” but uses glycerin-based components for sweet pumps that are a bit different.
Now here’s the problem that we see with 1MR – people who want more pumps keep adding more scoops of it… DO NOT DO THIS! Sure, you’ll get more AAKG and creatine in there, but you’ll also be doubling the amount of insane energy that absolutely nobody wants.
You need to know what 300mg of caffeine will do to you before you use this! If you don’t know, then back off and use half a scoop first! You can work up to a full scoop. You might be a 250lb bodybuilder – caffeine sensitive people don’t always need a full scoop!
This is why we sometimes see bad reviews – people don’t know how to properly use the stuff! Don’t keep adding more of it – instead, augment it with some low-cost yet super-effective pump ingredients for the best of both worlds!
You also won’t want to take this product too late at night. If you’re into nighttime workouts and expect to go to bed an hour after you return from the gym, we’re going to flat-out tell you that you should probably not be using this unless have have no problem sleeping through the stims.
Additionally, start light, especially if you are new to pre-workouts or are very stimulant-sensitive. Don’t use a full dose – Ease into things with a half scoop until you’re comfortable. Of course, this will reduce the pumps, so read on about how to solve that problem next…
Moving on to user reviews we see that BPI Sports 1MR gets mixed reviews, as can be predicted, when considering anything but mental focus and central nervous system stimulation. “It certainly does what it promises, at least for the energy and focus part.” “Insane energy and weird focus.” Reports one user who also noted no intense vascularity with a pronounced crash afterward. Taste reviews have also been less than favorable. Leaving one with the idea that a 1MR supplement shouldn’t be taken for the nitric oxide effect or muscle building, but for the energy, intensity and focus. Jack3d weighs in as more favored towards the muscle building and pump producing effects, rather than a full on central nervous system stimulator. “Jack3d wins the taste test, increased muscle output, with less stim,” says one user of both supplements. “Jack3d has a lower energy portion but is fortified with the agents necessary to see gains fast,” said another Jack3d user.
So what side effects can we expect from the two? 1MR side effects include the classic caffeine list. Hard crashing, too much energy for too long, difficulty sleeping, and difficulty staying asleep after consistent uses are normal when considering the amount of caffeine present in the supplement. Unfortunately the effects of one of the other ingredients, Dimethylamylamine, a stimulant, have been known to cause possible interference in dopamine re-uptake that could account for the mood changes seen in consistent users. Jack3d contains a much smaller sample of caffeine analogs and has far fewer pronounced caffeine side effects. The list of side effects of Jack3d ends there, however, with few users reporting any side effects at all.
Given the information presented, an informed athlete can easily see that BPI 1MR is for use when seeking a strong energy rush during their workouts or lifting sessions. While Jack3d is for those that need energy, but are more interested in seeing pronounced muscular gains.
