The DMAA Study
The study revolved around 1,3-dimethylamylamine, a commonly used ingredient in the pre workout supplements found on this site. There were previous studies that indicated that slight increase in blood pressure levels were detected after a single oral ingestion of a dose. The spike was only seen in systolic blood pressure though, and none in the resting blood pressure.
Additionally, there were also studies before that found products with 1,3-dimethylamylamine to have very minimal to no effect on blood-borne markers for health. The DMAA safe study was done in order to extend the findings of the previous studies by utilizing an intervention trial involving men for 10 weeks to detect changes in the pre-determined markers of health.
How the DMAA Safety Study was Run
For the study, 30 men with resistance training were recruited from the University of Memphis and its surrounding community. The sample size was derived from similar studies, although a power analysis was not done beforehand. The subjects were self-reportedly non-smokers and do not have metabolic or cardiovascular diseases. For further information on the subjects, questionnaires about their health history, physical activity, and use of dietary and drug supplements were filled out.
The subjects were then instructed to keep at their current training and dietary programs throughout the duration of the study, with the exception of staying away from strenuous exercise 48 hours before every lab session. The subjects also didn’t take dietary supplements, except for protein powders and meal replacements. The subjects were randomly assigned their group for the DMAA safe placebo-controlled research study, with one group taking a placebo and the other taking a supplement with 1,3-dimethylamylamine for 10 weeks. Before and after each lab session, heart rates and resting blood pressure were measured and blood samples were taken to determine lipid and metabolic panels and complete blood counts.
For the duration of the DMAA safe study, subjects attended lab sessions in the morning after following an eight-hour overnight fast before and after every dose during those 10 weeks. After arriving at the lab, the subjects were made to rest for 10 minutes in a supine position. Heart rates and blood pressure levels were measured and recorded and not more than 20ml of blood was taken as a sample. The blood samples were sent to the Laboratory Corporation of America for processing and analysis involving lipid and metabolic panels and complete blood counts using automated procedures. To better characterize the subjects, their body composition and body mass were also measured. All procedures were the same for all instances before and after interventions during the study.
The Study was Placebo Controlled and Double-Blinded
The groups separating the subjects for the DMAA safe study were subjected to two conditions. First, there was the use of a placebo powder that contained the same volume of every dose of a 1,3-dimethylamylamine supplement, including ingredients like microcrystalline cellulose, citric acid, silicon dioxide, acesulfane-K, vegetable state, sucralose, natural flavor, and some chlorophyll for color.
And second, there was the use of the supplement Jack3d containing proprietary blends of the ingredients 1,3-dimethylamylamine, arginine alpha-ketoglutarate, caffeine, β-alanine, creatine monohydrate, and schinzandrol. The subjects were given instructions to take up to three servings of their assigned supplement on their workout days, 30 minutes before they exercise. The mean number of days the subjects worked out every week was four. Supplement were also not to be taken on the days the subjects don’t exercise and they were to head back to the lab to get more of their assigned supplements. Both groups were to take their assigned supplements with 8 ounces of water.
It’s important to note that it’s tough to fully “double blind” a study like this, since users who are healthy will clearly know that they were part of the non-control group when they feel the stimulants kicking in. But that means little since they likely do not have the “power” to change their blood pressure or serum lipids levels.
Results of the Study
The results of the DMAA safe study showed that there were no dramatic differences between blood pressure conditions, though there was an increase in systolic blood pressure. For the heart rate, a main effect for the time was taken note of, with values going down from pre intervention to post. There was also no significant interaction seen for low density lipoprotein cholesterol levels, with values going down for the group taking Jack3d from pre intervention to post. No other effects were also significant enough to be noted for the blood-borne variables.
It was concluded based on the data from the DMAA safety study that dietary supplements like Jack3d containing 1,3-dimethylamylamine do not cause significant increases in resting heart rates or blood pressure levels when taken as directed. This means that use of 1,3-dimethylamylamine does not impact blood-borne health markers negatively, although further studies may be done utilizing longer intervention periods, additional health measures, and a bigger sample size. Results of this DMAA safe study should allay any fears people might have regarding using 1,3-dimethylamylamine as a pre-workout supplement for physical training.
