Much has been said about the numerous nutritional benefits of arginine rich foods, but not a lot of people know what these actually are. This article takes a look at the benefits you can get by eating foods high in arginine, so that you don’t have to rely solely on the nitric oxide supplements listed on this site.

What is Arginine?

Before looking at the benefits of arginine rich foods, it’s a good idea to understand what arginine is.

Arginine is one of the 20 amino acids that make up protein. While technically considered as a nonessential amino acid, it’s far from being useless. The reason why it’s considered as a nonessential amino acid is because the body can synthesize arginine from other amino acids through food. In fact, it actually plays several important roles to make sure that your body is running as it should.

There are two kinds of arginine: L-arginine and D-arginine. L-arginine is the one that is most utilized and synthesized by the body. While humans can produce L-arginine naturally (with the exception of infants), the main source of these amino acids remains to be from food.

  • Releasing of hormones. The main role of arginine is to trigger the release of vital hormones to make sure that your body is running as it should.
  • Better immunity and faster healing. Arginine boosts your immune system to better protect you from illness. It does this by alerting the antibodies in your system immediately should a virus enter your system, thereby treating the problem before it worsens. Should you get injured, the amino acid also quickens the healing process. This is the reason why those who have gone through surgery may be prescribed with supplements containing arginine, as it will hasten the healing of the wound.
  • Cleansing. Arginine boosts the kidney’s ability to filter out the waste materials from the body. It also helps the body flush out the ammonia in your system.
  • Improved sexual function. By metabolizing nitric oxide, arginine dilates and engorges the blood vessels in the clitoris and the penis, thereby improving sexual function and even helping treat erection problems of males. It also helps males produce more ejaculate. Studies have indicated that arginine can also improve fertility.
  • Lowering of cholesterol level and blood pressure. Studies have shown that eating arginine foods can also help people lower their cholesterol level as well as their blood pressure, making this a good natural option for those who have cardiovascular problems. In fact, some doctors prescribe arginine to their patients to help prevent cardiovascular diseases.
  • Helping relieve the symptoms of menopause. Arginine can also help control the symptoms of menopause, particularly hot flashes, by normalizing the muscles and blood vessel linings, thereby providing relief from the symptoms of the condition.
  • Boosting mood, relieving stress, and eliminating depression. Depression, stress, and anxiety can be relieved by eating arginine rich foods.
  • Improves memory. Eating food rich in arginine can also improve your memory and boost your cognitive skills.
